Window Film -- Sales Tax

Question: Sunray™ Window Films has been asked why we charge sales tax for window film installation? 

Answer: Window film is taxable because it is a retrofitted item and is removable.

Question: Is paint considered taxable?

Answer: No. The reason is because it is considered permanent.

Question: I have had 2 other quotes from other window film companies and they said they don't have to charge sales tax for window film because its for energy savings. Is this true?

Answer: Absolutely not true. NO! These companies will be in trouble with the Ohio Department of Taxation when they have an audit. Paying for Sales Tax is a monthly responsibility. If those companies choose to not pay for taxes, they will not be in business very long when they get audited.

Question: If I wanted to purchase window film would I get taxed for the purchase?

Answer: Yes. If you wanted to buy a cheap window film at the local Lowes store, you could but would get charged sales tax once you make the purchase.

Question: Who can I contact to find out more information about sales tax?

Answer: Sales tax is different from county to county. Check with the Ohio Department of Taxation or call 1-(800)282-1730.

  Longstreet Auto Body @ 472 Richmond Road Richmond Heights, Ohio 44143 wanted to reduce glare, and solar heat with the east facing windows. The upper windows produced unwanted glare in the morning and we had used 3M NV15 for 82% glare reduction, and 3M NV35 for the entrance way to reduce glare but let customers see inside the body shop. Jeff Longstreet  the owner, did not want to look like he was closed, so Sunray mentioned a lighter 3M film NV35. 

The properties for 1/4 inch single pane glass with 3M NV15 applied:

Emissivity: 0.70 when measured using a Devices & Services Emissometer Model AE at or near room temperature
    U-Factor: 1.04
    Visible Light Transmission (ASTM E 84): 15 percent
    Visible Reflection:
     Exterior (ASTM E 903): Not more than 19 percent
     Interior (ASTM E 903): Not more than 43 percent
    Ultraviolet Transmission (ASTM E 903): Less than 1 percent
    Shading Coefficient at 90 Degrees (Normal Incidence) (ASTM E 903): Not less than 0.29
